Texture Design for Diverse Virtual Touch Sensations: Perceptual Breadth of Parameter-Driven Turing Patterns - (2026)
In this paper, we mapped the perceptual spaces of Turing Patterns across three sensory modalities–via visual feedback, touch feedback using physical textures, and touch feedback using virtual textures. Check out the final publication through ASME.

Haptic Interaction Methods for Freehand Contour Generation on a Refreshable Pin Display - (2025)
In this paper, we looked at three different input modes for tactile drawing that spanned the range of input methods found in commercially available pin displays. This would be using direct fingertip input on the surface of the display, using a stylus input, or splitting the surface into a drawing surface and a ‘feeling’ surface (e.g., an ipad for input, the pin display for output). We found that displays that engaged both hands and were constrained to a single surface led to superior user experience and performance. Check out the final publication through ASME.

Effects of Distributed Friction During Sliding Touch - (2025)
In this paper, we looked at different ways of distrbuting friction as a means to manipulate the deformation of the fingerpad. This was an attempt to determine whether you could render salient edges using friction modulation. Ultimately we found that this was not possible; however, you could shear the fingerpad in interesting ways by distributing friction perpindicular to the direction of motion. Evaluation of Rendering Strategies for Supporting Recognition of Raised Pin Shape Geometries - (2026)
In this paper, we wanted to know if we could encode additional information within or render a raised pin tactile graphic in such a way that would be easier for an individual to identify it using only tactile feedback. This work was presented at the 2026 IEEE Haptics Symposium. Check out the final publication through IEEE.

Virtual 3-d shape rendering: Strategies for supporting the information encoding potential of surface haptic displays - (202X)
In this paper, we investigated different rendering strategies and platforms for presenting 3-D information using tactile feedback. This paper is currently under review for publication.

Evaluation of Dynamic Rendering Strategies for Supporting Recognition of Raised Pin Shape Geometries - (202X)
This project is an extension of the work outlined in the ‘Conference Proceedings’ section. Here, we investigated the utility of tactile animations for guiding user behavior for the purposes of shape identification. This work is currently in-progress, with plans to submit for publication in early Fall 2026.
